Austin Flores Names Cane Cutters Head Coach

The Cane Cutters are proud to announce Head Coach Austin Flores as the newest addition to the Cane Cutters Baseball staff.

After serving 5 great years at the helm, Lonny Landry is calling it quits and paving the way for Flores.

“Austin is a great coach, and will bring a lot of fire and passion to Fabacher Field”, Landry stated.

The Florida native, Flores, comes to us from Nicholls State University, where he serves as an Assistant Coach alongside former Cane Cutter Assistant, Zach Butler.

As a graduate from Nicholls, Flores finished his playing career in a Colonel uniform in 2012. He was a part of two Southland Conference tournament teams, including the 2011 team that made it all the way to the tournament semifinals.

After his playing career, Flores took to the field to become a scout and an assistant.

While working with PerfectGame, Flores was a scout who evaluated players during national tournaments and showcases, including having duties as field supervisor during those tournaments.

Flores also served as a scout for the under 15 east showcase for Team USA, helping evaluate players during scout days and tournaments. He helped scout the U.S. team that won gold at the COPABE Pan American Championship against Cuba.

“Lonny helped establish great summer baseball here in Lafayette, and we look to Austin to continue to grow the success”, stated Owner Richard Chalmers.

Flores is no stranger to summer ball, as he served two years as a hitting coach in the Northwoods league. While he was there, he led the Mankato Moondogs to a second place regular season finish and would take them to the Summer College World Series back in 2014.

The 2016 Cane Cutter season will be ready to roll at the end of May. Be sure to check us out for new additions to the team and show your support at Fabacher Field this summer.
