Copperheads can't shoot down Bombers

Coppell, TX- For the second time in the young 2010 summer, the North Texas Copperheads (6-9) find themselves in the midst of a four game losing streak, losing to the Brazos Valley Bombers (9-6), 10-6.

The solid pitching that gave the Copperheads a four game winning streak last week has been absent over the last few games, as well as any strong run support, a problem that has plagued the team all season.

Starting pitcher Kyle Felts (Southern Arkansas), one of the team’s top pitchers this season, suffered through a rough outing, allowing seven runs on seven hits through 5.2 innings. Felts (2-1) picked up his first loss of the year, and saw his ERA nearly a full run to 2.61.

Relievers Ben Hays (Arkansas) and Heath Johnson (Penn State) kept Brazos Valley off the scoreboard through 2.1 innings. Hays allowed a pair of hits, while Johnson, making his 2010 debut, struck out a pair of Bombers in the eighth.

Taylor Mabra (Texas-Arlington) hit his second home run of the year, a solo shot in the third off starter Brian Borski (Texas State), cutting the Bombers lead to 2-1. A three run home run by Casey Dykes (Western Kentucky) in the fourth knocked the wind out of the Copperheads.

North Texas slithered back into the game thanks to a two run double by Matt Shortall (Tulane), and an RBI single by J.T. Files (Navarro) in the sixth.

With the Brazos Valley lead cut to three runs, the Copperheads gained new life until the Bombers put the game away with a three run ninth inning off North Texas reliever Chris Haney (Dallas Baptist).

North Texas added two runs in the bottom of the ninth before being put away by the Bomber pitching staff.

Marcellous Biggins (Howard) led the home team with two hits, while another seven players each collected a hit of their own.

The Copperheads continue their home stand with another game against the Bombers on Monday, and conclude it on Tuesday against the Texas Tomcats.
