SUBLETT TO THE RESCUE

Damon Sublett could be seeing a lot of double duty for the Coppell Coppellheads as the team tries to defend its Texas Collegiate League championship this summer.

The freshman from Wichita, Kansas has played a major role in his first year at Wichita State University. He has bee a regular for the Shockers at second base, posting a .321 average with 23 rbi in 34 games. But his best work of late for the 32-12 Shockers has come on the mound. Sublett has become Wichita State's closer, pitching 7.1 scoreless innings with saves in each of his last four appearances beginning April 5. Overall, the rightander, who bats from the left side, has not allowed a run in 8.2 innings over six appearances this season with a 1-0 record, 5 saves, 12 strikeouts, and an opponents batting average of .074.

Sublett earned all-state honors at Wichita's Northwest High School in both his junior and senior years, finishing with a career .468 average and exceling on the mound. He will be one of nine Wichita State players in the Texas Collegiate League this summer.

ARKANSAS: 1B-DH Danny Hamblin (Coppell) takes a 13-game hitting streak into this weekend's series with LSU. In that span, the sophomore from Rowlett, TX is hitting .469 with 5 homers and 17 rbi, raising his average to a team best.375. He last went hittless on April 1 vs. Auburn. Hamblin also leads the 14th ranked Razorbacks (31-8) in hits (51), doubles (14), total bases (94), homers (9), slugging (.691), and on-base percentage (.436). He homered 3 times in a 15-8 win over Oral Roberts on April 12.
Clint Arnold (Weatherford) has been seeing regular time behind the plate for the Razorbacks, tossing out 5 of 10 runners attempting to steal. He is batting .307 with 15 rbi in 32 games. LHP Devin Collis (Graham) is 2-0, 4.26 in 11 games.

BIRMINGHAM SOUTHERN: RHP Mark Doll has been added to the Highland Park Blue Sox roster. Doll is 3-1, 3.00 in 9 appearances this spring for the 22-15 Panthers.

CALIFORNIA-DAVIS: SS Brandon Oliver (Euless) ranks 2nd on the club at .331 and has 8 steals in 11 tries in his 35 games. Freshman 3B Grant Hirneise (Euless) was 3-4 with 3 rbi in a win over the Univ. of Nevada on April 19 to raise his average to .261.

CAL STATE FULLERTON: John Curtis (McKinney) continues to shoulder the catching load for the 2nd ranked Titans (23-8), starting 35 of 41 games behind the plate this spring. He is hitting .261 with 18 rbi, and the Titans are 9-1 when he drives in at least one run.

CINCINNATI: 1B Logan Parker (McKinney) has a .286 average with 5 homers and 27 rbi in 32 games and tops the Bearcats with 10 doubles.

CLEMSON: SS Stan Widmann (Euless) has started all 38 games at short in his freshman year, one of 4 Tigers (24-14) to start every game. The Hurst (TX) L.D. Bell product is hitting .298.

DALLAS BAPTIST : C-INF Damien Gomez (Denton) leads the Patriots with a .372 average in 23 games. RHP Randall Taylor (McKinney) tops the staff in wins (5), starts (12), innings (78.2) and strikeouts (46). He issued just 2 hits and 3 unearned runs in 8.1 innings in a 3-2 loss to Texas-Pan American last week. RHP Stuart Sutherland (Highland Park) is 4-3, 3.77 in a team high 17 games.

DARTMOUTH: LHP Russell Young (Graham) is 3-1 in his 5 starts and is tied for the Big Green team lead in wins.

EVANSVILLE: OF Kern Watts (Denton) ranks 2nd on the Aces with a .344 average and has 13 steals in 17 tries.

GEORGETOWN (DC): OF Mark McLaughlin (Coppell) has a .320 average, 4 homers, and 25 rbi in 36 games for the 20-19 Hoyas. He is tied for the team lead with 9 steals.

KANSAS STATE: RHP Dan Edwards (Denton) has posted a 2.60 era in 11 appearances for the 18-17 Wildcats.

LAMAR: OF Matt Lambeth (Euless) has a .285 average with 2 homers and 19 rbi in 40 games for the 28-14 Cardinals. LHP Tim Erickson (McKinney) is 4-0 in 9 games.

McMURRY: LHP-OF Greg Erickson continues his two-way excellence for the 27-14 Indians. On the mound, he leads the team with 44 strikeouts and is 2nd with 6 wins in his 9 starts. At the plate, Erickson is a .399 hitter with a team best 6 homers and 32 rbi in 39 games. He set a school record with 3 homers on April 12 vs. Austin College.

McNESSE STATE: OF Charlie Kingery (Highland Park) leads the team with 30 rbi, is tied for 1st with 5 homers, and has a .282 average in his 38 games.

MISSOURI: 1B-3B John McKee (Euless) is tied for 2nd in the Big 12 Conference with 47 runs and is 2nd with 38 walks, an average of 0.94 per 9 innings that is 14th best among NCAA Division I players. McKee has a .322 average with 5 homers and 35 rbi in 37 games for the 17th ranked Tigers (28-9). He tuned up for this summer by walking 4 times and producing a 2-run double in a win over St. Louis in the 6th annual Wood Bat Classic on April 20.

OKLAHOMA STATE: 2B Justin Colbert (Graham) is tied for 2nd in the Big 12 Conference with 47 runs and ranks 3rd with 56 hits and 32 walks. He has a .480 (12-25) average in his last 6 Big 12 contests and carries an overall 8-game hitting streak into this weekend's series with top ranked Texas. The junior transfer from Seminole St. has a .339 overall average and leads the 28-14 Cowboys with 8 steals.
OF Trey Rachel (McKinney) has a .296 average and OF Steve Ptak (Graham) has a .271 mark and 20 rbi in 33 games.

PACIFIC: Despite being bothered by a left ankle sprain, 3B Justin Baum (Coppell) leads the Tigers with 10 homers and 25 rbi in 35 games. 1B Matt Berezay (Highland Park) has 8 homers and 26 rbi as he and Baum have combined for 18 of Pacific's 32 homers this spring. SS Anthony Jackson (Coppell) has stolen a team best 14 bases in his 34 contests.

RICE: RHP Eddie Degerman (Denton) continued his outstanding spring by being selected as the Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for April 11-17. The junior from Granada Hills, California earned the honor after pitching a 4-hit complete game shutout with 7 strikeouts on April 16 against Hawaii. Degerman has won his last 4 WAC starts with a 1.16 era and an opponents .135 batting average. For the season, he is 5-0 in 10 games with the WAC's 3rd lowest era at 2.09. Degerman also is 5th in the conference with 69 strikeouts in 56 innings, an average of 11.1 every 9 frames, the 25th best ratio in Division I.
The 15th ranked Owls (26-14) have also been led by several other TCL-bound pitchers. RHP Josh Geer (McKinney) leads the WAC with 7 wins and 78 strikeouts and is 2nd with a 2.00 era, 54th best in Division I. Freshman RHP Bobby Bell (Weatherford) is 2-0, 1.82 in 13 games with 25 strikeouts in 24.2 innings. RHP Ryne Tacker (Coppell) is 3-0, 4.70 in 11 games and RHP Bryce Cox (McKinney) is 1-2 with 3 saves in 16 appearances.
OF Tyler Henley (Euless) ranks 2nd in the WAC in runs (38) and is tied for 3rd in stolen bases (9-9) while hitting .272 in a team best 40 games. 3B Greg Buchanan (McKinney) has recovered from an early season leg injury and is at .286 in 28 contests. OF Adam Hale (Weatherford) leads the Owls with 7 homers and has 27 rbi in 31 games.

SAM HOUSTON STATE: 2B Isaias Garcia (Euless) is tied for the Southland Conference lead in homers (10), ranks 3rd in total bases (88), and is tied for 5th in rbi (34) while topping the BearKats with a .322 average in 38 games. OF Dustin Martin (Graham) is 2nd on the team at .306 in 35 games and SS Jose Salazar (McKinney) is at .291 with 6 homers and 26 rbi in 39 contests.

SPRING ARBOR: 3B Jeff Tebeau (McKinney) was selected as MCC and Region 8 Player of the Week for April 11-17 after batting .625 with 2 homers and 8 rbi. The freshman from Williamston, Michigan has a season average of .418 with 7 homers for the Cougars.

TCU: OF Spencer Jackson (Weatherford) has a .254 average in 28 games in his freshman season for the Horned Frogs.

TEXAS: Freshman RHP Kenn Kasparek (McKinney) continues to pitch effectively for the top-ranked Longhorns (33-6). He started without a decision versus #15 Rice on April 20, issuing just 2 hits and 2 runs in 5.2 innings with 6 strikeouts. He is 3-0, 2.83 overall this season.

TEXAS A&M: 2B Parker Dalton (Mineral Wells) is hitting .276 with 20 rbi in 42 games for the 25-16 Aggies. He had 2 hits and scored twice in an 8-0 win over Texas Southern on April 20. Three TCL bound pitchers worked in that shutout: RHP Kyle Nicholson (Weatherford)-1.1 ip; RHP Blake Rampy (Euless)-2 ip; and RHP Chance Corgan (Euless)-1 ip. Nicholson earned the win to improve to 3-0, 4.32 in 14 games. Corgan is 3-2, 4.15 in 15 contests with 34 strikeouts in 39 innings. OF Keith Stein (Euless) is hitting .267 with 19 rbi in 29 games.

UTA: C Brett Lewis (Denton) has started 32 of 41 games behind the plate for the 21-20 Mavericks with a .260 average. OF Joe Newman (Weatherford) ranks 2nd on the team with 4 homers and 22 rbi in 32 games, including a game-winning grand slam on April 16 against UT-San Antonio.

UTAH: 2B Jay Brossman (Mineral Wells) has hit safely in his last 11 games at an amazing .596 (28-47) with 4 homers and 22 rbi to lift his season average to a team best .369 with 5 homers and 33 rbi, also club highs, in 35 games. In a 5-game stretch from April 9-16, he was 17-28 with 20 rbi and homers in each of the last 4 games of that period. Brossman went 9-11 with 2 homers and 6 rbi in consecutive games versus UNLV, April 15-16 and had 6 rbi on April 9 versus Air Force.

WAKE FOREST: RHP Kyle Young (Euless) is 3-1, 4.32 and tops the Demon Deacons in appearances (23) and saves (3). RHP Charlie Mellies (Euless) is 2-3 with a team best 3.75 era in 12 contests. He also leads the staff in innings (57.2).

WAYNE STATE: The McKinney Marshals have added RHP Ryan Mosher from Wayne State University to their 2005 roster. The freshman from Ann Arbor, Michigan is 6-1, 2.81 with 4 complete games in 11 starts for the 24-10 Warrirors. Mosher will take the Marshals' roster spot of RHP Jacob Marceaux, a junior at McNeese State who is expected to a selection in major league baseball's June amateur draft.

WICHITA STATE: OF Blake Hurlbutt (McKinney) is hitting .298 in 43 games for the 32-12 Shockers. OF Tyler Hill (Coppell) is at .287 in 36 contests. LHP Rob Musgrave (Euless) is 1-0, 4.40 in 12 outings and RHP Jared Simon (Euless) is 2-0, 4.50 in 10 appearances.

WRIGHT STATE: 2B Brendan Rubenstein (Weatherford) is 2nd on the team with a .364 average and 17 rbi in 29 games. OF Ross Oeder (Denton) has a .320 average in 30 contests.
