Victoria and Lake Charles Take Game 1 of TCL Semifinals
The 2026 Texas Collegiate League Playoffs opened Tuesday night with two tightly contested semifinal matchups, as the Victoria Generals and Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators each earned Game 1 victories to move one win away from the TCL Championship Game.
Lake Charles Edges Acadiana, 2-1
The No. 3 seed Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators defended home field with a 2-1 victory over the No. 2 seed Acadiana Cane Cutters in a well-pitched battle.
Acadiana struck first in the third inning when Aidan Eshelman drove home Gage Hinnant with an RBI double to give the Cane Cutters a 1-0 lead. The advantage was short-lived, however, as Lake Charles answered in the bottom half of the inning. Ayden Sunday tied the game with an RBI single before Bankston Lembcke followed with a run-scoring hit to put the Gators in front for good.
Lake Charles starter Jake Rider earned the win after allowing just one run on six hits over six innings, while Daniel Midkiff was dominant out of the bullpen. Midkiff struck out six over the final three innings to record the save and preserve the one-run victory.
Eshelman led Acadiana offensively with three hits and the club's lone RBI, while Sunday paced the Gators with two hits, a run scored, and an RBI.
Victoria Rallies Late to Defeat Brazos Valley, 8-4
The top-seeded Victoria Generals erupted for six runs over the final three innings to defeat the defending champion Brazos Valley Bombers, 8-4, in Game 1 of their semifinal series.
After Victoria built a 1-0 lead, Brazos Valley responded with a four-run sixth inning highlighted by a two-run home run from Tanner Cooper and a two-run single by Tiger Donnato to take a 4-1 advantage.
The Generals quickly answered in the seventh before exploding in the eighth inning. Roman Cariaga delivered the biggest swing of the night with a go-ahead three-run homer as part of his five-RBI performance, while Davidenko Rodriguez also homered to help Victoria pull away. Cariaga finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBIs in the comeback victory.
The Victoria bullpen was outstanding after the Bombers' sixth-inning rally. Ryan Porche picked up the win with 1.2 scoreless innings, and Clark Scallon closed the door with a scoreless save, helping limit Brazos Valley to just two hits over the final 3.2 innings.
Looking Ahead
With the victories, Victoria and Lake Charles each take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three semifinal series. The action shifts on Wednesday, July 29, with Game 2 featuring Brazos Valley traveling to Victoria and Lake Charles visiting Acadiana. A win by either Victoria or Lake Charles would send them to the 2026 TCL Championship Game, while victories by Brazos Valley and Acadiana would force decisive Game 3 matchups on Thursday.
