Victoria Tosses Combined No-Hitter, Abilene Rallies Late, Sherman Sweeps, River Monsters Edge Rougarou
It was another exciting night across the Texas Collegiate League on Wednesday as dominant pitching, dramatic comebacks, and another offensive showcase highlighted the action. Victoria's pitching staff authored the league's first no-hitter of the season, Abilene erased a late deficit with a five-run eighth inning, Sherman completed a sweep of Brazos Valley, and San Antonio held off Baton Rouge in a tight contest.
Victoria Generals 6, Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators 0
The Victoria Generals made history Wednesday night, combining for a no-hitter in a commanding 6-0 victory over the Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators.
Starter Drew Wenske was brilliant, tossing eight hitless innings while striking out 11 before handing the ball to Nate Bergeron, who completed the ninth to finish off the no-hit effort.
Victoria broke a scoreless tie in the fourth before steadily pulling away with runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.
At the plate, Braden Fuentes paced the offense by going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Brock DeYoung collected two hits and scored once. Juan Cantua also finished with two hits and crossed the plate once.
Lake Charles managed just three walks as their only baserunners while striking out 11 times.
Abilene Flying Bison 9, Acadiana Cane Cutters 8
The Abilene Flying Bison staged one of the biggest comebacks of the season, scoring five runs in the eighth inning to erase an 8-4 deficit and defeat the Acadiana Cane Cutters 9-8.
Acadiana appeared in control after Ethan Espricueta drove in four runs and Josh Hernandez added two RBIs to build the lead.
Abilene answered with a furious rally highlighted by Kanon Sundgren, who finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Cole Neatherlin blasted a home run and Lincoln Reinke reached base four times while scoring three runs.
Jorge Roman earned the win in relief, and Stetson Callaway closed the door in the ninth for his first save of the season.
San Antonio River Monsters 4, Baton Rouge Rougarou 3
The San Antonio River Monsters bounced back with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Baton Rouge behind another quality outing from MJ Espinoza.
Espinoza worked 6.2 innings, allowing just one run while striking out seven to improve to 4-2 on the season.
San Antonio manufactured runs throughout the game, with Bruno Robles driving in two runs and Jackson Harris delivering an RBI single.
Baton Rouge made things interesting late, scoring once in both the eighth and ninth innings. Trip Dobson homered for the Rougarou, but Jake Ramirez shut the door in the ninth to record his first save of the year.
Sherman Shadowcats 9, Brazos Valley Bombers 7
For the second straight night, the Sherman Shadowcats outlasted the Brazos Valley Bombers, this time earning a 9-7 victory.
Sherman built an early 7-0 advantage before Brazos Valley stormed back with a six-run fifth inning to make things interesting.
The Shadowcats answered with insurance runs and held off the late rally behind contributions throughout the lineup.
Ricky Requejo drove in three runs, Ellington Jefferson collected two RBIs while stealing three bases, and Tyler Sessions added another RBI.
For Brazos Valley, Tiger Donnato continued his hot streak with two hits and three RBIs, while T.J. Pompey added two RBIs in the loss.
Sherman pitchers worked around eight walks to secure the victory and complete the two-game sweep.
