Acadiana, Victoria, San Antonio and Baton Rouge Earn July 17 Victories
Friday night's action across the Texas Collegiate League featured plenty of offense, a dramatic extra-inning finish, and another wild chapter in the Sherman-San Antonio rivalry as four teams picked up key wins heading into the weekend.
Acadiana Cane Cutters 10, Brazos Valley Bombers 7
The Acadiana Cane Cutters outlasted the Brazos Valley Bombers in a game that featured 31 combined walks, using a five-run sixth inning to pull away for a 10-7 victory.
Acadiana built an early 3-0 advantage before Brazos Valley answered with five runs in the fifth inning to briefly take a 5-3 lead. The Cane Cutters responded immediately with two runs in the bottom half of the inning before erupting for five more in the sixth to regain control.
Despite collecting just six hits, Acadiana capitalized on 16 walks issued by Bombers pitching. Josh Hernandez went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Ethan Espricueta added two hits and two RBIs. Gage Hinnant and Grant Haas each drove in a run, and McCann Libby reached base four times via walks while scoring twice.
Brazos Valley finished with eight hits and drew 15 walks of its own. Jacob Bohacek paced the offense with two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs, while Tiger Donnato scored twice and added an RBI. Eddie Castillo collected two hits and an RBI, but the Bombers stranded 15 runners on base in the loss.
Victoria Generals 5, Abilene Flying Bison 4 (11 Innings)
For the second consecutive night, the Victoria Generals found a way to beat Abilene, this time walking it off in 11 innings for a thrilling 5-4 victory.
Abilene struck first and later erased Victoria's early 4-1 lead with a three-run fifth inning highlighted by a two-run double from Manny Salas.
The game remained deadlocked into the 11th before Victoria finally broke through. Brock DeYoung and Lucas Wilson continued their hot offensive performances, with Wilson finishing 3-for-6 with two RBIs. Josh Arquette supplied the biggest hit earlier in the game with a three-run homer to stake the Generals to their early lead.
Victoria's bullpen was outstanding after starter Alex Renfrow exited. Clark Scallon, Nate Bergeron, and Trent Buckley combined for 6.1 innings of shutout relief while striking out 13 batters. Buckley earned the victory after tossing the final three scoreless innings with six strikeouts.
Abilene's pitching staff recorded an impressive 18 strikeouts, but Victoria's timely hitting and lockdown bullpen secured the extra-inning win.
San Antonio River Monsters 17, Sherman Shadowcats 12
One night after being shut out by Sherman, the San Antonio River Monsters exploded for 17 runs in one of the league's highest-scoring games of the season.
San Antonio erased an early deficit by scoring seven runs in the third inning and never looked back, finishing with 15 hits.
Jake Pineda led the offensive barrage, going 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Roman Trinidad blasted a three-run homer, while Nathan Hodge scored three runs and drove in two. Hunter Ham added two hits and two RBIs, and Alex Villalobos chipped in two hits and two RBIs.
Sherman battled throughout the night, collecting 10 hits of its own. Ryan Sessions drove in four runs with a three-hit performance, Tyler Sessions doubled twice and knocked in two, while Zach Fjelstad homered and drove in two runs.
After allowing nine runs over the first four innings, Bruno Robles settled in to pitch the final five innings and earned the win while limiting Sherman to three runs the rest of the way.
Baton Rouge Rougarou 8, Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators 6
The Baton Rouge Rougarou bounced back with an 8-6 victory over the Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators by capitalizing on a pair of multi-run innings.
Lake Charles jumped out to an early 3-1 lead before Baton Rouge answered with a four-run third inning and added three more runs in the fifth to take command.
Taylor Walters finished with three hits and an RBI, while Haze McCorkel doubled and drove in two runs. Trip Dobson contributed two sacrifice flies, and Hayes Hebert added a pair of hits as the Rougarou matched the Gumbeaux Gators with nine hits.
Lake Charles was led by Matthew Scott, who homered and drove in four runs. Reid Snider collected three hits, while Kash Martin added two hits, including a triple.
Reliever Tyler Bickett picked up the win with two innings of work before Colt Lejeune closed the door in the ninth to earn the save.
With Friday's slate complete, teams continue jockeying for playoff positioning as the regular season enters its final stretch, setting the stage for another exciting weekend of Texas Collegiate League baseball.
