Bombers, Gumbeaux Gators, Generals and Shadowcats Pick Up July 16 Victories
The playoff race continued to heat up across the Texas Collegiate League on Thursday night as Brazos Valley used a big middle-inning surge to defeat Acadiana, Lake Charles capitalized on early offense to roll past Baton Rouge, Victoria rallied late to top Abilene, and Sherman blanked San Antonio behind a dominant pitching performance.
Brazos Valley Bombers 9, Acadiana Cane Cutters 4
The Brazos Valley Bombers broke open a scoreless game with seven runs over the fifth and sixth innings before holding off a late Acadiana rally for a 9-4 road victory.
Starter Ian Rister was outstanding, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out eight to earn the win.
The Bombers' offense took advantage of eight walks and a pair of Cane Cutter errors. Kason Atkins delivered the biggest swing of the night with three RBIs, while Derek Martinez drove in two runs. Reese Lunsford, Tobias Motley, Eddie Castillo, and Jacob Bohacek each added an RBI as Brazos Valley built a commanding 9-1 lead entering the ninth.
Acadiana refused to go quietly, scoring three runs in the final inning behind RBIs from Gage Hinnant, McCann Libby, Isaiah Castaneda, and Zack Berry, but Matt Taylor recorded the final two outs to seal the victory.
Both clubs finished with eight hits, but Brazos Valley's patience at the plate—drawing eight walks—and timely hitting proved to be the difference.
Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators 10, Baton Rouge Rougarou 2
The Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators erupted early and never looked back, scoring seven runs through the first three innings on their way to a convincing 10-2 win over Baton Rouge.
Lake Charles scored once in the first before exploding for four runs in the second and two more in the third to seize complete control.
Reid Snider and Jeremiah Torres each homered, with Torres finishing with two RBIs. Ayden Sunday tripled and drove in two runs, while Yuichiro Kumagami and Lane Sparks also contributed RBIs.
On the mound, Diego Corrales continued his impressive summer, allowing just one unearned run over six innings while striking out six to earn his second victory of the season. The bullpen of Brenyn Ebarb, Taylor Hollier, and Cade Robin combined to finish off the win.
Baton Rouge managed six hits, led by two from Bryson Jones, but committed three errors that helped fuel the Gators' offensive outburst.
Victoria Generals 5, Abilene Flying Bison 2
The Victoria Generals scored three runs in the seventh inning to erase a one-run deficit and claim a 5-2 victory over the Abilene Flying Bison.
Abilene grabbed an early 2-1 lead thanks to an RBI from Braden Regala, but Victoria stayed within striking distance despite collecting just three hits.
The Generals showed tremendous patience at the plate, drawing nine walks while taking advantage of timely sacrifice flies from Diego Gonzalez and Roman Cariaga. Keegan Demmer delivered the biggest hit of the night with an RBI double during the decisive seventh inning.
After starter Xavier Woods worked three innings, Brock Thorndell shut down the Flying Bison over the next three frames before Ryan Porche closed out the final three innings, combining for six scoreless innings while striking out eight.
Abilene pitchers struck out 11 batters but issued nine walks, allowing Victoria to manufacture enough offense to secure the win.
Sherman Shadowcats 3, San Antonio River Monsters 0
The Sherman Shadowcats received a dominant pitching performance to blank the San Antonio River Monsters 3-0 at home.
Starter Spencer Bass was outstanding, allowing just two hits over 6.1 scoreless innings while striking out six. Brody Mahan followed with 1.2 hitless innings, and Edwin Nunez retired the side in the ninth to complete the two-hit shutout.
Sherman broke through in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Tyler Sessions before Ismael Bencosme delivered the game's biggest swing—a two-run home run in the fifth—to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Shadowcats collected eight hits, with Zach Fjelstad leading the way with two, while John Moya, Cole Carnes, Ryan Sessions, and John Langehennig all chipped in base hits.
San Antonio starter Matthew Foley battled through eight innings, allowing just three runs (two earned) while striking out eight, but received no offensive support as the River Monsters managed only two doubles all night and struck out 10 times.
