Congratulations to Tim Grieve for the Major League Baseball debut of Tyler Collins with the Detroit Tigers on March 31st, 2014.
Collins entered the game as a pinch runner for Alex Avila in the 9th inning of the Tigers' Opening Day game against the Kansas City Royals. With the score tied at 3-a-piece, Collins represented the game winning run on second base. A one-out single from teammate Nick Castellanos advanced Collins to third, where he went on to score the winning run after an Alex Gonzalez single.
Collins became the 5th player, since 1979, to make his MLB debut as a pinch runner and score the winning run on a walk-off hit. Cal Ripken Jr. and Tommy Herr are among the other players who hold this same recognition.
Tyler Collins has since gone on to make his Major League debut start in the second game of the season, batting second in front of Miguel Cabrera.
